Q Cover

Q is a more sophisticated example of an indie magazine, the combination of gold and red suggest this. Red is also the iconic colour for this particular magazine and is featured in every issue. The sophistication is also shown in the covers layout, other indie magazines are set out a lot more randomly, with pieces of texts and images placed oddly around the page and at an ascewed angle, whereas Q magazine is set out cleanly and in an organised manner. All pieces of text are in line with each other and everything is placed at a 90 degree angle with a straight cut edge.

The masthead also fits in with this sophistication, the font used isn't particularly rough cut like other indie magazines, rather it is smooth and perfectly placed on the cover so that it is in perfect line with the boxes around it. The title of the magazine 'Q' was originally supposed to be cue taken from the term cuing music, however it was changed to Q to make it shorter and sharper.

The central image chosen for this particular cover is a code for the kind of magazine it is, the artist is poised and composed and is wearing a suit. However his musical flare is
still shown in the tie he has chosen as it isn't conventional, much like the indie genre.

A highlight feature of this magazine is that whilst still covering the indie genre it is still neutral, it doesn't specifically call out to any demographic it simply covers the artist. However what we can tell is that the typical colour scheme of Q, red and white, shows that it appeals to both genders. This is exactly the kind of magazine i was referring to in my previous ideas, there's no fun side to it, it's almost like a business. In my magazine i hope to avoid this.
