Photo editting

These are the album covers i created for my double page spread feature on the top selling albums of the past decade. Originally I had hoped to be able to use 10 album covers but unfortunately they don't all fit on the one page so I'm sticking with 5.

For this image i solely used an Internet programme called picnik to edit the image. Initially i hadn't planned on using this image, it was purely experimental, but i found that the boost effect managed to bring out the main facial features and brighten the skin without the need for further editing. I then softened the image and added a soft border by using the matte tool to give it a dream like quality. I chose a font that was soft and childlike to match the album theme.

The original image here was one of a window display in oxford street. For this i first used the editing software gimp2 to isolate the doll face and cut it perfectly from the image. I then transferred this over to picnik where i first enlarged the image. i then used the night vision effect followed by a neon effect to create the army styled colouring. i chose to only apply 20% of the neon effect so that the night vision was still the dominant effect. Whilst still using this programme i selected a font that perfectly suited the army style.

I used paint, gimp2 and picnik to create this album cover. I first used gimp2 to isolate the images i wanted and put them together, unfortunately because of the layering feature on gimp2 i had to use paint to repeat the eyes and arrange the planets in the order i wanted. I then transferred the image back on to gimp2 and erased the bottom left hand side of each planet to create the effect of light coming from that side. I also used the eraser on the incremental setting with a blue background to bring out the colour of the eyes in a way that would make them lighter around the edges. To finish the eyes i used the burn tool to bring back the black pupils. Using picnik i then boosted the colour and cropped the image to shape. Originally i chose a font that matched the album title 'Nightmare' however, after experiencing difficulty with the capital N, i went for the second best. I've made the artist name a different colour to the album name as i whilst i felt the album title was more important than artist name, it should still stand out more to maintain the artist recognition.

Originally i took this photo hoping to be able to capture the pinkish reflection of the sun on the clouds however it didn't appear as vibrant as i had hoped, so instead i decided to use it for the almost car shaped flash reflecting off the window. I solely used picnik to edit this photo. i first boosted the colours to make them more vibrant then used a 1960's effect to remove the corners of the photo. i felt it would give the album cover some edge if it wasn't the conventional shape. i then used the adjustable threshold to remove the colour, and the using the effects brush in reverse, brought the colour back to the area surrounding the camera flash. I went for a font that went against the album image and name to change it from an edgy rock album into a softer heart warming album.

I liked the idea of using an item from this picture for the cover, i went with the deer as it was the only one that included a full view of the flower patterned wallpaper behind. I used picnik to first isolate the part of the image i wanted. I then wanted to make the album focus solely on the deer so i used a focal zoom to keep focus on the deer and turned it in to a pencil sketch to give it a winter effect rather than keep the 60's colouring. I went for different fonts to make the artist name more prominent than the album title, i went for this particular font for the album title to make it appear like part of the original image.
